Matthew Swerdlin

Mr. Swerdlin joined the Quinn, Connor, Weaver, Davies & Rouco LLP firm in thier Birmingham office in March 2011 and represents union clients and individual employees in litigation in both federal and state courts. He has worked on cases involving federal labor and employment law, federal preemption of state law, and Alabama personal injury law.

Before moving to Birmingham, he practiced as an Assistant Public Defender in Portsmouth, VA for almost one and one-half years. In that capacity, Mr. Swerdlin represented indigent defendants charged with felonies and misdemeanors in Virginia state court. He had primary responsibility for one dismissal and two successful sentencing verdicts in three felony jury cases for charges such as gun possession by a felon, forgery, and grand larceny. At the public defender.s office, he handled a diverse and heavy caseload, including clients charged with drug, violent, and driving crimes.

Mr. Swerdlin has been admitted to the bar in Alabama (April 2011) and Virginia (October 2009), as well as the Northern District and Middle District of Alabama.

Mr. Swerdlin graduated from George Washington University Law School with J.D. in 2009, where he was a member of the Mock Trial and Alternative Dispute Resolution Boards. During law school and after passing the Virginia Bar, Mr. Swerdlin worked for Cozen O'Connor's Washington, D.C. office. Prior to attending law school, he was a Washington, D.C. Teaching Fellow, where he taught sixth grade math and science in a D.C. public school and also earned a Masters degree in teaching from American University in 2006. He graduated from University of Colorado at Boulder with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Economics in 2002. He grew up in Baltimore, MD.
